Decline in Tree Cover in Syria Between 2001 and 2024
Syria has witnessed a significant decline in tree cover across most governorates. This decline is not coincidental but rather the result of a combination of human and natural factors:
• Ongoing conflicts that have destroyed vast forest areas.
• Governmental neglect in protecting natural resources.
• Excessive and unsustainable reliance on trees as a source of fuel and energy, particularly amid economic crises.
